Olympus issues urgent update on how to clean scopes linked to CRE outbreak
Olympus America — maker of the duodenoscopes that have been linked with two recent “superbug” outbreaks in California hospitals — has issued an urgent safety notification with new cleaning instructions for the medical devices.
According to the device maker, the new cleaning instructions require the use of a small-bristle brush which will be shipped no later than May 8.
In addition to using small-bristle brushes, instructions include flushing the forceps elevator recess area more often and raising and lowering the forceps area more while cleaning.
The new instructions should be implemented as soon as possible, according to the safety notification.
